LOS ANGELES (AFP) -- Second-seeded James Blake saved a match point en route to a three-set victory over Paul Goldstein here Thursday to book a quarterfinal berth in the 525,000-dollar ATP hardcourt tournament.

After fending off elimination, Blake won the final three games in a 6-0, 1-6, 7-5 second-round victory over his fellow American. Blake had dominated in winning the first set in 23 minutes. But Goldstein charged back in the second. Leading 5-4 in the deciding set, the 97th-ranked Goldstein was on the verge of a huge upset. But Blake battled back to knot the set, broke Goldstein in the next game then served out the match. Blake, ranked ninth in the world, next faces American Vince Spadea, celebrated his 33rd birthday by posting a comeback win over 2006 finalist Dmitry Tursunov. Spadea, who was presented with a birthday cake on court following his match, beat the fifth-seeded Russian 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals for the seventh time this season
